Truth in a world of discontent

Blog Post #1: Fact or Fiction? Setting the Record Straight About Common Myths Surrounding Guns

It’s true, firearms are a controversial subject. Everyone has an opinion, and it often feels like you can’t turn on the TV or browse Facebook without hearing about it. However, it’s important to be informed on a subject before making a decision on where you stand. That’s why we’re taking a moment today to address three common misconceptions you’ve probably heard at least once.

Myth #1: Anyone can purchase a gun.

Fact: In order to purchase a gun from a licensed dealer, one must pass a background check. Under federal law, there are ten types of people who would be rejected by that background check. They are: felons, fugitives, drug addicts, the mentally ill, illegal immigrants, some legal immigrants, people who have renounced U.S. citizenship, people under restraining orders, people convicted of domestic violence and anyone charged with a crime that could bring more than a year in prison.¹

Myth #2: Gun violence is at an all-time high.

Fact: While 56% of Americans surveyed believe that gun crime is higher than it was 20 years ago, gun violence is nowhere near as high as it was back in the 90’s. As of 2016, 3.4 deaths per 100,000 people occur due to firearm violence, compared to 6.21 in 1993.²

Myth #3: Semi-automatic weapons should be banned.

Fact: As Timothy P. Carney put it, “The use of the phrase semi-automatic when talking about guns is like using the phrase ‘gasoline cars.’” Semi-automatic just means that you don’t need to reload after every single shot. Pull the trigger and only one bullet will come out. To outlaw semi-automatic guns would be to outlaw the majority of guns used today. The exceptions are few – Think vintage firearms, like muskets. Your handgun? Most likely semi-automatic.³

In conclusion, misinformation is easily spread, and often used to promote a certain agenda. Don’t take everything you hear or read at face-value, and do your own research. You may find yourself surprised by the facts!
